THEME SPACES in EXPO 2015 IZMIR
2015 is predicted to be the date for covering UN’s millennium goals. In this context, the date of EXPO 2015 Izmir will meet the accrual date for UN’s millennium goals following a parallel direction of targets. Since the health topic will cover an extensive place in the world agenda as the date approaches, both the nations’ governors and humanity will focus on the topic. This will both increase the attractiveness of the participation to Izmir EXPO and will strengthen İzmir’s importance in the world. Health has been a concept on which the humanity has always emphasized and tried to progress. Humanity, by continuing to make researches, and trying to find out the unknown problems of human body, will struggle with the threatening diseases in future as it is today. The theme “Health” is not used only for the physical and mental health of a human being, but it is used in the most comprehensive meaning, including all the fields and sectors which are related to health. Most importantly, when the themes of the previous EXPOs’ are examined a theme that encloses health and life quality will integrate accordingly to the previous themes and will meet the future expectations of humanity. 2000 Hannover = People, Nature, Technology2005 Aichi = Wisdom of Nature2010 Shanghai = A Better City, A Better World2015 Izmir = New Routes for a Healthier World and Health for All Nature, technology and the secrets of nature will be used for a better city and a better world and the goal is to increase people’s life quality. The topic of health appears as a cardinal issue in the history of Aegean Region from antique period to present day. The topic of health is related to the Asklepios among Greek Gods, and the sacred places which are used for treatment are called Asklepion. Two of the three Asklepions mentioned in antique resources are in Aegean Region. One of them is in Kos Island and the other is in Bergama. The third Asklepion is in the city of Korinth, Epidauros in our neighbor country Greece. Nonetheless, Allianoi Antique Cure Center, which was discovered in 2000’s, is a place that geothermal curing methods are implemented. Hippocrates who is considered as the father of medicine carried out his studies in Asklepion of Kos, and Galenos who is considered as the father of pharmacy carried out them in Asklepion of Bergama. Agamemnon Thermal Springs that are told in Homeros’s legends and the Diana Baths in texts of antique writers were in the periphery of İzmir in Hellenistic period. Archeological evidences and historical resources prove that İzmir and her periphery led medicine. All of the above mentioned antique cure centers were effectively used during the Roman and Byzantine periods. The history indicates Ottoman Emperors’ vision about health and the written texts of the era prove that they put health before anything else. The innovations and the usage of new technologies in the health sector and related medicine and chemical sectors will always draw world’s attention. Maintaining the support and sponsorship of medicine and chemistry industries is easer compared to many other possible themes. When we think of the fact that 4 of the 10 largest companies of the world from the health sector (Pfizer, Merc, etc...), we clearly see the accuracy of this argument.
The subjects that would make a theme, including “Health” and “Life Quality”, attractive are:
1) Struggle with poverty and hunger
2) The new methods for decreasing baby deaths and protecting the health of mother and child
3) Healthy life (sport for health)
4) Healthy nutrition (obesity, balanced diet, importance of olive oil and methods of diet
5) Alternative medicine
6) Health education, Medicine faculty, modernization of health education
7) Innovations in the health technology
8) New targets in genetics
9) New technologies and targets in the medicine and chemistry industry
10) Struggle with the diseases such as AIDS, malaria, bird flue, etc , protection of the biological balance, radiation accidents
11) The future of arrangements and social security institutions
12) The targets of private health insurance
13) Targets of first aid, emergency operations and organ donation
14) Handicapped people and their integration to the society by improving their life standards
15) Struggle with the consumption of tobacco and addiction of tobacco
16) New solutions and methods for the solution of mental problems, which is according to the data of the World Health Organization, one of the most important future diseases of the humanity
17) “the Network of Healthy Cities”
18) Health tourism, “Hot spring resorts”
The titles, listed above, can be related with the advancement of health conditions and life quality. However, we have to state that under this theme the subjects like “Geriatric Health”, “Genetics”, “Mental Health” and “Health Technology” will be more important and cover an extensive place.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION (7 weeks): DESIGN OF THEME SPACES in EXPO SITE
AR 102 Studio will start with a team work made of 5 students who will work on a project related with EXPO 2015 matters. Each student group will start working with the production of some common concepts and strategies on the project and then continue with their individual designs.
The expo sites generally need an arrangement of a wide piece of land which also brings a problem of easy access as well as good orientation. The cognition of the whole area by the visitors becomes an essential factor for good orientation. For this reason, the general layout and definition of the main and secondary axis should be carefully considered during the planning phase. On the other hand, a clear layout alone is generally not enough to solve the problem of good orientation. The architectural quality of the built environment in terms of size, form, color and texture also help to create an overall cognitive understanding of the site map.
In this project, you are asked to create a series of theme spaces which will be located on some junction points on the site plan. The function of these spaces are mainly resembling the theme of expo 2015 (Health and healthy life) and helping to determine the orientation for the visitors. It is anticipated that each group will come up with five different space proposals each of which will have a particular sub-theme. Although there will be five separate spaces, it should be bear in mind that there is a need for unity in the design concept. So, after the completion of group decisions, each student will design his/her own project.
Since the theme of Expo 2015 is already selected as health and healthy life, the theme spaces should depart from this start. From the period of Antiquity, the land of Anatolia has been a host for health institutions as it is stated in the introduction part above. The asklepion, the gymnasium, the bath, the hamam and the spa are the very historical institutions of medical, physical or psychological treatment. In this project, these historical examples will be our inspiration sources. Thus, the sub-themes of these spaces are selected as follows:
· Relaxation
· Exercise
· Curing
· Purification
· Amusement
Each theme space will be dedicated to the one of the keyconcepts given above. These spaces will not accommodate intricate functions inside. Instead, they should provide some kind of entertainment activities for the visitors related with their key concepts such as exhibition or performance halls. They can be treated as a part of the show business that takes an important place among the targets of expo fairs. It is essential to remind that these theme spaces will have a symbolic and semiotic value and serve as attraction points.
The group study should start with writing the scenario. The definition of the spaces will be a part of group decisions. The theme spaces, each of which will be approximately 100-150 sqm will form a series on the site which means that they will be interdependent to one another in terms of form, proportion, color and texture.

MISCALLENEOUS:
Team work is an important notion which all architecture and planning students should gain. Thus, the harmonious work within the team is a vital issue. Any complaints about group studies will not be accepted.
7 Crits out of 9 is a must for presenting the project.
Although the group studies seem end on 12 March, the individual projects will be reviewed in relation to the other projects in the group in order to discuss the unity among them. So, the group members will gather around a common desk during the reviews. Each student should listen to the reviews of the other projects.
Please do not pick your best friend while making the group. This does not always become the right choice.

During the individual project development model and sketching is obligatory. Without model and sketching nobody can take crit from the studio professors.
About the Short Movie: The short movie will narrate the scenario of the team. How does the team interpret health and healthy life, relaxation, exercise, curing, purification and amusement. Do not add long texts or narrations. A good short movie should have a strong visual language which does not need the help of verbal expression. Be original, determined and persuasive. A strong style always works such as ironical, metaphorical or stimulating style.
